Presenting the village
Cervera del Rio Alhama is a village in the province of La Rioja, Spain, with a population of 1000. The village is located at the foothills of the Sierra de Alcarama, along the banks of the river Alhama, with on top of the hill the ruins of an old castle dating from the 13th century.
From the 17th to the 19th century, Cervera was famous for manufacturing textile fiber and making canvas for merchant ships and the Spanish Royal Navy.
It is even said that the sails of the ships of the Invincible Armada were produced in Cervera. The entrepreneurial nature of Cerveranos has been focused since the 13th century on the development of the espadrille, which has become the symbol of their identity.
